He must have fallen asleep. He couldn’t tell by the light… it was still full sunlight, so he guessed maybe a couple of hours? His eyes were scratchy and his head pounded with tension. The shower was in a small, attached bathroom. Lachlan stumbled in there, shedding the borrowed clothes as he went.

The water was hot, and he let it pound his neck. A couple of the Band-Aids had curled at the edges, so he pulled them until they came off, placing them in the small bin outside the shower door.

What he found underneath was nothing. A couple of deep scratches, that was all. What did Rory think at the moment? He had gone all the way to the hospital for Lachlan and brought him home. Then he’d slept on the sofa last night just to stay with Lachlan. How telling was it that when Lachlan needed somewhere to hide it had been Rory who had found him and that Lachlan hadn’t hesitated to leave?

It’s just proximity to the accident.

If the crash had happened in the US, would he be running to Rory? Would Rory have come for him?

Am I just here because I know Rory unconditionally supports me?

Frustrated with his thoughts he clenched his fists at his side until the self-pitying moment passed. Then he dried off and lay back on the bed. His muscle pain eased as he relaxed, but this time, when sleep came, it was the kind that let nightmares in.
